A multi-focal lens replaces the eye’s natural lens in a procedure to treat either cataracts or advanced refractive errors including presbyopia. Most cataract patients require reading glasses following cataract surgery because traditional intra-ocular lenses (IOLs) only provide good distance vision. There are now several FDA-approved IOLs that offer clear vision at all distances including near vision. They provide this functionality using two types of technologies – Multi-focal and Accommodating. These lenses are popularly known as Premium Lenses. AcrySof ReSTOR®
FDA trials showed that about 80% of people who were implanted the multi-focal ReSTOR lens did not need eye glasses following cataract surgery. ReZoom™
This is another multifocal IOL with five optical zones that distribute light to provide clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances. In a European study, 93% of people receiving this IOL seldom needed reading glasses. Crystalens™
This is an accommodating IOL. When the natural lens is removed, the eye’s accommodative ability is also lost, and the Crystalens was designed to restore vision for the correction of Presbyopia. The term accommodation refers to the ability to switch focus instantly when the eye moves from far to near distances and everything in between. The lens does this by changing its curvature. Toric IOLs for Astigmatism and Cataracts
If you have cataracts and moderate to severe astigmatism, a Toric IOL which is a clear, spherical lens can be used to replace the natural lens of the eye. Apart from cataract patients, other patients who wear glasses or contact lenses can also selectively benefit from such IOLs, particularly those with high prescriptions who are non-candidates for laser vision correction and others with ocular injuries. Please consult Dr. Giliberti if you or a loved one may have a cataract so that you can be evaluated for Premium Lens implants. Call (973) 595-0011 or E-mail us to schedule a consultation.
