Overview

About Retinal Conditions

Retinal disease is the leading cause of new legal blindness in working-age Americans. Early detection through comprehensive retinal imaging — before any vision change occurs — is the single most important factor in preserving sight.

The retina is the light-sensing tissue lining the back of the eye — any damage to it can have permanent consequences for vision. At Giliberti Eye & Laser Center, we use wide-field fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and fluorescein angiography to evaluate the retina with exceptional detail. We manage diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal tears, and other macular diseases, coordinating with specialist retinal surgeons when surgical intervention is required.

Key Benefits

  • Wide-field digital retinal photography
  • OCT imaging of the macula and optic nerve
  • Diabetic retinopathy monitoring and laser treatment
  • AMD risk assessment and monitoring
  • Retinal tear detection and laser treatment (in-office)
  • Timely specialist coordination for surgical cases

What to Expect

Your Journey to Better Vision

01

Dilated Fundus Examination

After dilation drops, we examine the full retina with a binocular indirect ophthalmoscope and fundus lenses, assessing the optic nerve, macula, vessels, and peripheral retina.

02

Retinal Imaging

Wide-field photography and OCT cross-sectional imaging provide a detailed, documented baseline. These images allow precise comparison at future visits to track changes.

03

In-Office Laser Treatment

Retinal tears are treated with in-office laser photocoagulation (retinopexy) to prevent progression to retinal detachment. Diabetic macular edema may be managed with focal laser therapy.

04

Specialist Coordination

When vitreoretinal surgery, intravitreal injections (anti-VEGF for AMD), or complex retinal detachment repair is indicated, we coordinate prompt referral to trusted subspecialist surgeons.
